Wedding cake flowers

Fresh flowers or sugar flowers: what changes?

Compare appearance, preparation, timing, colour control and who is responsible for supplying and placing each flower.

Fresh flowers need coordination

The florist should confirm the exact varieties rather than supplying an unlabelled bundle on the day. Bouquet flowers are not automatically suitable for placement near food.

Agree who supplies, prepares and places the flowers. The cake maker and florist should not both arrive expecting the other person to complete that work.

Sugar flowers are made for the cake

Sugar flowers can be shaped and coloured for the design, including flowers that are out of season or too delicate for the venue conditions.

They require substantial handwork and drying time. Order early when the cake includes a large cascade, several varieties or detailed petals.

Think about the final look

Fresh flowers have natural variation and may not match a swatch exactly. Sugar flowers can follow a defined palette more closely.

A few well-placed flowers may be stronger than covering every tier. Send the invitation, attire or florist palette if colour matching matters.

Record the handover plan

The written order should say who brings the flowers, when they arrive and who places them. For venue delivery, include the florist and coordinator contacts.

If the floral plan changes, tell us before the wedding day. A different flower size or arrangement can change the balance and setup time.
